When Luis had appeared at the beach, Reece had wanted to discuss Bear Trap’s message, but after the kayak came in, Luis had disappeared. And Bear Trap’s deadline had come and gone some time ago.
Reece paced the length of the office. What were the repercussions to Luis and his gang? And why did Luis still have men at the beach? Reece could understand Luis wanting them there before and during the meeting with Bear Trap, but why continue?
He stared out the window. The plan the Gordones’ leader had thought out hadn’t worked—partly because the storm washed the body inland too soon. And partly, because Becca had been there and pulled the body ashore, then identified it right away.
The idea, if Reece could see it, was to have Luis hauled in while he was in the area—for whatever reason—just carrying weapons would do that. Then later when the body washed up, the fact that Luis was pulled over near the time of death and in the vicinity would put him on the sheriff’s radar.
Reece sat down on the edge of his desk and stared out the window. Get him on suspicion of murder, and then what?
Was there more to it? Because if the police arrested Luis, he’d still be running his gang from the inside of a jail cell. It was done all the time. From prisons all over the US. A charge of murder, even if they could make it stick, wouldn’t give the Gordones what they seemed to want—additional territory.
He took in the parking lot outside, the few trees, the edge of sky, and sighed. The police still wanted Luis. Reece felt the threat. He couldn’t blame the police. As the officers found out last time, Luis came armed. Some gang members wanted a turn in prison. It gave them cred when they returned to the streets. Reece had never wanted that. He loved his freedom—then and now. Luis was a kindred spirit. Reece knew it instinctively. And Luis would fight to keep that freedom.
Reece turned his head, feeling the heaviness. These days, Luis resided in his heart, in his mind, and in his prayers.
Lord, if you want me to talk with him, bring him here.
There, he’d put it in God’s hands. Reece could stop worrying about it. He picked up the book for his night study course on counseling. Best read up in case Becca came back with a situation that dealt with something other than murder.
An hour later, the Harley’s motor brought his head up. He listened, smiled, and closed the book. Okay, Lord. If I could always just give the whole thing to You and watch You work…
On autopilot, Reece reached for the bottom drawer. He hesitated. Okay. Okay. He left the Glock where it was. He wasn’t going to fight the man. He wanted him to turn himself in. Reece would go with him. Keep him safe.
Reece stood and walked to the door. Not saying Luis hadn’t done it, but it didn’t make sense. It was the Gordones’ territory.
